A few tricks: Buy a flap and set the volume low (sold separately) to make it sound like a real one, and tilt the unit forward a little (about 1- 2 inches). get more sound. -D effect. I was considering buying a DFI2309 to save some extra money until I read that I should use the DFI2310. I bought this product for the same reasons people drive electric. I'm tired of cleaning the wood fireplace and the smell of creosote. If I want to experience a log fire, I go back and light a fire pit. I just inspected and gave a thorough cleaning to the fireplace in our family room, so I really don't want to mess it up right now. A chimney sweep company found a few tiny cracks in the paneling and the previous owners didn't add dampers to the chimney because of the huge wood stove they had installed. The oven died (was over 400lbs, 80s) and we ended up removing it. Cold air was blowing up the chimney, so we filled the bottom with non-combustible material to block the air. It worked. Another reason we can't grow firewood. Installing two dampers (we have two chimneys) at $500 per damper plus building a chimney to hold the dampers would cost just under $2,000 and we still have a wood burning fireplace to contend with. A gas insert is considered, but it cost us over $6,000 plus two shocks. Now we're fast approaching $8,000. Our fireplace is very large - 54x38hx37d. I went looking for the best electric fireplace inserts and I kept coming across Dimplex. The price of fireboxes is 1000-2000 dollars plus our volume depending on the size. Since it's Christmas, I didn't want to spend too much money now. It's nice to sit right in front of the fire. Because the heat radiates directly outwards (not up, down, or sideways), the logs I put around the unit don't get heated. It is save. But it didn't even seem to warm the Christmas stockings hanging up front, which my real fire always did (I had to take them off when we had a real fire). So I'm not sure if it heats up the room, but that's not what I bought it for. I wanted to fill the huge empty hole in the fireplace that we had in the living room. I think overall I'm very satisfied and for the price it's a really good product until we decide whether to switch to Optimyst firewood with a heater or the more expensive Dimplex electric firebox with real logs. UPDATE: I purposely waited to post until I had used this embed for several hours. I have to say, now I'm in love with this thing. The whole 3 second Disney effect I saw right out of the box is completely gone. I understand that this is psychology and that's a good thing. I really "see" 3 dimensions. Another clue is that both the cat and dog entered the common room and curled up on the couches. I put their beds by the fireplace and they went to their beds. Apparently they like fire. The real turning point was when my eldest son walked into the room and sat down to watch a show about racing cars. After 5 minutes he fell asleep. So be careful. You can fall asleep as soon as you "light" it. The atmosphere is wonderful. I will try to add videos and photos.
