I bought this case for my new 3DS Pokemon Edition which is a regular New Nintendo 3DS not XL. It fits perfectly and slips on overlays for those of you who are interested. I buy my cases mainly to protect against scratches so I don't know how good it will be with drops as the case can be easily removed. But in any case it fits perfectly, is easy to put on and does not interfere with the game. If you're thinking of getting it, do it, it's worth it.
