Smells like solder (lead?)

No L or R marks except on the wire. Okay, but how do you know which cable to connect to which headphones? Sound quality is okay, nothing special, on par with $10 headphones, which is pretty normal. Put on foam ear tips for better isolation and bass response. I bought them as studio/stage in-ear headphones, essentially like earplugs that can be worn for protection (from drums) and still hear the singer (through headphones). I've tried others in the past and have never been entirely happy with them, but for the price I thought I'd give them a try. I tried them all for about 7 minutes when I couldn't stand the smell anymore and had to put them in another room. They smell like solder from a factory in China. I recognize the smell because I used to build guitar pedals and solder myself (I keep a soldering iron and lead solder on my workbench because it's much easier to work with than silver or other lead-free solder). Maybe it's flux? Anyway, I could smell it when I opened the box and now my head hurts. Soldering doesn't usually give me a headache, so maybe other chemicals are being released as well? Yes, that's right. Also, the cord is too short, there's no built-in mute switch, and the wire that goes through the ear is semi-flexible and will return to its shape, but can't conform to your ears, so it won't really help hold them , just keep the cable on the side while you play. I generally prefer to wear $10 drugstore earbuds or just earbuds like the ones from a repair/tool store. Spend the extra money when you need in-ear headphones for a musician. Or whatever, try these out, maybe I had a bad pair and you can still return them. I'm returning this pair right now, 30 minutes after UPS delivered them, and I'm getting a different make/model for me.
