Nice and long which is great because my son's original viola case strap was _very_ short. One thing I found preventing him from getting a 5 was that one of the two pieces holding the clip was too wide allowing the clip to come loose. I took the pliers and "compressed" them a bit and the problem went away. As advertised, this can be either short or _very_ long. It pairs well with viola cases allowing you to carry the viola comfortably which is great for cold and windy climates like ours where you don't want to poke holes in the case to get your fingers while walking.
