Yes, almost all yarn sizes/types used can be measured in this way. But that's part of the problem - the markings on the many, many sensors involved are sometimes hard to read or don't make sense because they aren't labeled with units. So it basically makes sense to apply to the fastener and then to what you think should fit when it really does fit. Not very helpful when trying to measure a bolt where you expect to be able to read the gauge and order what you need.
