For a while I argued between this set and several others that had working reels and lines. As my children are only 1 and 2 years old I ended up going for these as I knew they would be better quality and last longer for younger children. I think I made the right decision. My 2 year old (almost 3 year old) loved catching them in and out of the tub! My 1 year old only saw this as a weapon to smack his sister as expected. I liked that the leash is of good quality, dries quickly and is not so long that you can wrap it around the child's neck. The fish is fully sealed so you don't have to worry about mold growing. The magnets are strong enough for a quick connection every time. My daughter winds both ways and has never had a problem with a jammed or broken spool. Ultimately I would suggest if you are buying for an older group, maybe 4 years and up, to buy another set with a working rod, reel and more fish. Larger children quickly tire of such a set. But it's perfect for younger children, entertaining them with a well-built, quality toy that seems to have the toughness to take the punishment their toy takes from being thrown, trampled and slapped!
