We built our deck using a set of 4 foot wide ladders. If it's smaller, it's very difficult to carry large grills, tables, etc. But it was difficult to find a pet gate that would work on such a wide stairway. This gate system is very durable, has a coating that prevents rusting from the elements and the hinge system is easy to install. Also, the fact that this additional extension was available allowed us to close our staircase. The Cardinal system features adjustable main gates that cover a variety of openings. Our 4 foot opening was a bit too big so we also bought an extension that bolts to the main gate to form a solid gate. Be sure to get stainless steel screws so you have rust protection. One note: the locking mechanism seemed a little odd when I first saw it, but once I installed it, it was awesome! We also use this as a children's gate and the locking mechanism only opens by pressing the two outer pegs at the same time and lifting the gate slightly. This is very difficult for a baby. Impossible for our cats!
