This is a revised review. I already mentioned that these radios do NOT require a license. I was wrong. After extensive research and a call to FCC support, I found that these radios require a license to operate. If you do not have a proper FCC license, you are breaking the law with any use. Now the question is: do you want to be a lawbreaker and assume the odds of getting caught are very slim? These radios are easy to use, require a license and appear to be well built and reliable. Competing brands, there are a few things to note: 1) All radios in this class have a transmit power of 2W. It doesn't matter if the manufacturer claims their radio has a range of 1 or 100 miles. Two watts are 2 watts. Under the same conditions, all 2 watt radios have a very short range. The range can be increased by using special antennas. 2) There is a difference in how long you can speak or listen. It depends on the capacity of the batteries, measured in mAh - milliampere hours. A 1200mah battery will last longer than a 900mah battery. The higher the mAh number, the longer the battery will last before it becomes too weak to run the system. 3) "Cool" features such as a flashlight or FM radio use battery power even when not transmitting or receiving. 4) All radios in this class communicate with all radios from other brands. It's like a highway - all makes and models can use the same highway to get to the same destination. Overall I think these radios are very good, especially considering that all radios in this class are basically the same. That's better value for money than many other brands. Remember that you are buying a radio that uses the same frequencies as competing radios and the same transmission power.
