Product is defective - will not connect to Direct Receiver

When I received this remote I noticed that the item didn't even look new. The display panel looked worn, the springs where the batteries should have been placed looked stretched. I put new batteries in and the remote never connected - I took the batteries out and replaced them again. The same thing. I am returning this item. I don't understand why I should send it back to Whole Foods. Do not buy this product.
