Review on TomTom XL 4 3 Inch Navigator Packaging by Dean Love

Revainrating 3 out of 5

a bit disappointed but I'll live with it

First a little background: I'm a HUGE fan of TomTom. I like the user interface; I love the whimsical voices you can apply to the app. I've been using TT for a while - since version 4.x on Palm Zire72, then versions 5.0 and 5.20 on Treo 650, Tilt and now XL 330S. I expected the software to be "faster" on newer hardware. Compared to my old Palm 5.2 (a free upgrade from 4.x), the XL 330S feels a little sluggish: switching screens, getting directions and just general navigation mostly leaves me stamping my foot. .I'm not saying it's molasses slooooooow. It's just that I feel like I have to wait a few hits (more than my previous experience) for the UI to keep up with what I'm doing. For example, when you type in a form field and have to wait a second for the characters to appear on the screen :) Still, for the price, I can live with the interface. On the plus side, TT continues to lay out decent routes. and take me from point A to point B. Of course, there are times when I ignore directions and "go my own way," but on those occasions I feel like I don't really *need* GPS navigation. -ness" of this device. I didn't want anything with an MP3 player, speakerphone, blah blah blah. I'm a KISS fan (not a band) and do what you're good at. On that front, TT delivers. Most Der Big screen is a big plus for me, all other devices I've used the TT on weren't widescreen (square) It's much easier to see the details of the "status zone" on the big screen.
