Review on Avermedia MDVDEZUSB DVD EZMaker USB 2.0 πŸ“Ή External Video Capture Device: High-Quality Video Capture Made Easy by Ryan Pollock

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice little unit but the sound suffers

If you're looking for a cheap option to store all your old VHS tapes onto DVD, this is the one for you. It took me some trial and error to get a good copy (I recommend you read the reference book first). It CONNECTS your computer - expect at least twice the movie length for video playback/recording, chapter point setting and DVD encoding/burning. Straight to DVD only if you don't want chapter breaks in logical places (make sure the chapters are in the right order - if you skip the movie they will "move"). Don't expect to cut ads/unwanted scenes. The Broderbund MovieShop editor sucks and the Neo software just captures, sets a start and end point and creates up to 6 chapters and menus. Aside from the very basic editing features of the software, my only real disappointment is the sound quality. . Be sure to set the gain control to the minimum (e.g. 5) to avoid most of the tinny ringing behind certain notes. If you're a home theater lover and value sound, save $45 and buy pre-packaged DVDs. I wasn't able to save Pixar film either - nice colors wash out in translation, and fiddling with limited image controls before shooting doesn't help. All other movies picture as normal (for my 27 inch screen) even on the "best" quality setting. 4.7GB DVD+R discs are not big enough to hold full-length movies on "best" settings; You have to buy the $45 software upgrade. if you want to burn to dual layer DVDs with "better" settings. Stop bitching - my treasured collection of VHS movies will be saved from further deterioration (and VHS obsolescence) for a relatively small investment in this unit.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Too stupid
