According to the size grid (waist 34), I bought an average one. Once I put them on they were quite tight in all the right places. However, I removed a star because they don't compress as much as I'd like. They look more like tight boxer shorts than compression shorts. So I recommend going down a size if you want more compression. In terms of performance, they work well. I went out and ran 6 miles the next day and they kept me absolutely dry with no chafing.
