These waist extenders are perfect for me. I've been using them for about 1.5 years to increase my waistband from 34" to 36". I could go 38 inches with the edge loop, but that's not necessary. The extension comes in handy when winter comes and I tuck my flannel shirt and t-shirt under the waistband instead of just a light summer shirt. The extensions are usually hidden by my belt, but since I wear a lot of khaki and beige pants, the extensions don't really stand out when they stick out a little below the belt. The only downside is that they tend to crumble when washed, but I've stopped washing them - don't do it as they're covered and won't get soiled with external dirt or body oil.
