Need fan for hard drive case

Great idea in a small case. However, it is advertised as being able to clone drives up to 10TB. I was trying to clone a nearly full 3TB drive and at around 75% the drive was so hot it stalled. Luckily, no boot drive was cloned, just a bunch of data in the form of photos and videos. After it cooled down, I installed the partially cloned drive into my computer's empty bay instead of trying to clone it from scratch again. and connected the Sabrent USB 3.0 to an external SATA dual bay hard drive dock via USB 2. The idea was to complete the job by simply copying the remaining files to the new drive. Again the drive got so hot that it shut down before it even shut down. Some thoughts: If I connected the dock via USB 3.0, the higher transfer speed might allow the copy to complete before it gets too hot. I suppose it could also be that my drive is running hotter than most. It's a Seagate Barracuda (a few years old) but I've never had a problem putting it in a case. Of course, I've never loaded that much before. Your mileage may vary, but the next time I want to clone a large drive, I'll look for a dueling dock with a built-in fan. The good news is that my 40,000+ photos and videos are backed up to a separate external USB 3.0 drive, so I was able to complete the work without any loss.

Pros
  • There's something in there
Cons
  • Long wait
