The lights are battery operated so I can put them anywhere. As we are in the process of remodeling our patio we had to take them off but they were so easy to put on. They're long enough to cover our entire patio, which was nice when we didn't have to buy multiple lights. The remote control makes it easy to change the look of the lights. You need to make sure it's pointing straight at the battery compartment. The lights are bright but not bright enough to actually illuminate the area but they are a great decoration. They were a little dusty when we took them off but I was able to wipe them down with a damp cloth and they still work.
