Review on A Mercy Toni Morrison Audiobook by Monique Martin

Revainrating 3 out of 5

My first reading for the bluest eyes.

Mercy couldn't have been a better first choice to understand Tony's work. She opened the book and immediately went in search of the narrator. From that moment until halfway through the book, I knew that despite its brevity, I would not skim this book. I needed to go back to the beginning and cheer myself up a little. Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Honorable Mention, Ivy League Professor. They are not pulled out of a hat and just given to everyone. It was only after this farewell speech and reading the synopsis that the story came together. What I liked the most was the compassion received from the characters. Although I was filled with sadness, it wasn't the kind of sadness that clung to me. On the contrary, the picture that I ended up with largely corresponded to what I had in mind. the exchange of "legitimate" goods that were common at the time (mostly black Africans and bankrupt people of all skin types) and the reaction of people to their living environment. Some people go insane. Some accept their circumstances. Others (of all stripes) reject the terms. and still others, as the name suggests, do the most charitable things, like offering their daughter in exchange for a life where the child could be better off. I can't say that this is my favorite way to enjoy history. But I can say, having fed my fill of extensive historical insights, that it was a pleasant experience navigating among the most naïve of writers.
