Unleash Your Potential

First, a little background on how I got here. I have 300 SRTs that I don't use every day. Recently it was serviced and it turned out that it had a problem with the active exhaust system. Replacing the part from Mopar alone cost nearly $1,800 (no trouble). The reason is probably the $10 valve which didn't work but was beyond repair. At the dealer's service department, they suggested that instead of replacing the 3/4 exhaust system, they put in a more efficient exhaust. After extensive research, I decided on a Flowmaster Force II Catback exhaust and had it installed by the dealer. I knew from research that the damn MDS (4 cylinder mode) would cause problems. I didn't pay much attention to it at first, but then, after driving it for several days, I noticed a "hum". Sounds great when accelerating or hitting the gas pedal, but once you slow down at 40 or 80 you have a rumble. This drone isn't the end of the world, but it certainly made the car a lot louder than expected. I knew this was going to happen but was surprised when the retailer said "buy a Diablo i3". This confirmed my findings and I rolled the dice and bought a Revain tuner through the Midwest Aftermarket. The product arrived sealed but when I opened it I was very disappointed. Every picture of the device I've seen has a detachable OBD2 cable and the device I received doesn't have it. It was Sunday so I couldn't call Diablo/Holly for assistance. I chose not to connect it to the car but I went through all the updates by connecting it to my PC and also setting up Wi-Fi on the device. I was concerned that I was receiving an older model, although everything I've done with the product has worked fine (not connected to the machine at the moment). On Monday morning I called Diablo support and after waiting a full 20 seconds I called Steven. He stated that the device is indeed brand new and has an updated/new design. The model with the detachable OBD2 cable has been discontinued. The cable's physical connection to the device is secure and likely less prone to damage while using the device. I also emailed Midwest Aftermarket on Sunday and they responded first thing Monday, assuring me the unit was new and offering any assistance they could. I've already confirmed this with Diablo, but it was great to get a quick response to my query. So at 7:10 p.m. I started installing it on the vehicle. It says the initial setup and backup takes about 30 minutes. By my calculations, the initial setup took 27 minutes. This does not include the actual melody. The melody itself installs in 1-2 minutes. Before you begin, there are a few things to keep in mind. Make sure your battery is good/charged, stay in your driveway/garage (not outside), be prepared to cycle between OFF and ON probably more than 10 times during initial setup and setup. This process is absolutely not complicated, it just takes a little patience. Take your time between steps (I read this on some forums). Once you get a hint, wait 10 seconds before completing the action. There were some unexpected things, but I didn't have to fix/correct anything - just what was presented during programming. . I've had several faults related to the gearbox, safety features, cruise control failure etc. If you see things like this don't worry and don't react. This seems perfectly normal as the PCM is accessed, backed up or updated. So what about the results. I installed and tested "Diablo Tune". I knew MDS wasn't disabled yet, but wanted to check. I was both pleased and disappointed during a 20-minute test drive at speeds from 25 to 80 mph. The only disappointment was the MDS system. Once back in the garage I made another tune (took 4-5 minutes total) and applied the same tune but changed the MDS setting and turned it off. It was day and night when I took it out - I can't even describe how awful this MDS setup is. I have had the car for 4 years now and would like to have it done on day one. When MDS isn't engaged, it's much more responsive when you step on the gas. I found it good before, the detrimental effect of MDS on response is extreme. Recommendations: 1) Use your computer to update the device via USB. It has Wi-Fi, but my experience with Wi-Fi setup and functionality hasn't given me much confidence. The PC program (Update Agent or Ignition) is easy to use, recognizes your device and immediately performs the necessary updates. 2) Upgrade your Diablo device to 100% before getting to your car. You want to set up your car right away, save yourself the headache and fully update the device, and then when you have 1-2 hours to figure out the good part of the setup, plug it into the car. 3) Get 8345 instead of 8300. (if it fits your car). The difference is the ability to use pre-made ringtones instead of downloading custom ringtones. This is the same device with some minor software limitations. Get 8345 and you will be flexible. In general, this device met all expectations. The criticism I have heard is that the device is cheap, plastic and of poor quality. It doesn't compare to a mobile phone/tablet in terms of build quality, but I'd say it's not something you buy. You buy a device to do some "computer magic" and it does just that. Overall I am very satisfied with the device, it does what it promises. I'll be honest, I was apprehensive for the first 30 minutes of the process, but after those steps were completed and I made the tune, there were no more problems to solve.
