Our 2001 wood burning fireplace was a lot of trouble. Converting to propane, which would really heat up, cost over $2,650. Switching to propane as a "decorative gas appliance" costs $660, and propane is too expensive to waste here. This electrical unit is used to heat the common room, so we don't have to heat the stove as much. No, it doesn't look or smell like the real thing, but it does make a pretty good impression in a fireplace with the screens down. We removed the glass doors and associated brass, another bonus. We inserted a bluetooth speaker behind to play fire crackling sounds for atmosphere. Installation was a breeze except we want the cord to be hidden. Adding a dedicated 15Amp circuit behind an existing firebox isn't going to be easy, but it looks better and doesn't risk tripping the circuit breaker since all of our AV equipment is plugged into that circuit. At this point we have an appliance power strip that is plugged into another outlet on a little-used circuit. I'm impressed by the warmth it radiates. The fan at the top doesn't sound loud or uncomfortable. I'm glad we chose the 24-inch model. The 20-21" versions would look too small. The only drawback is that the magazines could look a bit more realistic.
