When we returned the XS and bought the S the fit was excellent. Measurements using the Fit Guide showed our dog was in the upper XS size range, but the sweater was too tight. The sweater feels comfortable and offers an extra layer of insulation. I doubt it offers much protection from stronger winds. When walking down roads with melted, slushy snow, the underside of the coat soaks up water like a sponge - to the point that we have to squeeze it out when we return home. Then again, all that black road sand and salt is on the sweater, not the dog. Same problem even in the forest when the temperature is around thirty. When everything is frozen, the fur stays nice and dry. We'll probably consider one of Ruffwear's most water repellent coats for snowy/wet days when temps are in the 40's to 25's.
