There are no problems using groups in Smart Life
They are easy to add to Smart Life and work well with all devices in the Tuya ecosystem. I was able to group these two lights in my office together with a colored LED stick in the corner and control them all at once with Alexa. I can say "Alexa turns the office blue" and the group I named the office in Smart Life turns blue. I have a small automation setup, when my Tuya doorbell camera detects motion, it changes my office group's color to orange. Those lights and the one in the corner turn orange so I know I have a visitor or mail (or some silly gecko clinging to a camera). This is a great way to bring the office to life with colored lighting behind the monitors.
