Large with filter attachment so it always stays in the aquarium. I attached a plastic hose to the outlet and ran it into the gravel because the current is too much for my fish (you can install a filter plate under the gravel to connect at some point to push debris into the water column). I just put it in the aquarium and let it run for a few hours after a water change. Sucks up all the floating debris and particles thrown up during a water change resulting in crystal clear water pretty quickly without clogging my main filter. You can also try replacing the sponge with fiberfill. My only complaint is that I wish the holes in the pre-filter went all the way around the plastic instead of just on either side.
