This barcode reader works right out of the box. I plugged it into my Mac, clicked "No" in the dialog box asking if it was a keyboard, and it immediately read the barcodes of the products in my database. I tried it with UPC product codes and it worked fine. It does not scan QR codes, only barcodes. I'll be using it as a trigger gun, not an always-on reader, so I don't need a stand. However, it is durable and easy to assemble when you want to use it. The cable is about 70 inches long and quite heavy for its purpose. This is my first barcode scanner of this kind and I didn't realize how easy it was to use. customize it as you wish. You simply scan the barcode on the instructions for use and you're done! You can change the keyboard language, switch from trigger to continuous scan, turn autodetect on or off, and choose different terminal characters (that follow the code number string). The beep can be turned on or off, or the reader can be configured for specific barcodes. There are other technical settings that I don't understand and luckily there is a 'reset' of the barcode to set it back to its default settings. Recommended, especially at a reasonable price.
