I have an old IBM PS/1 Consultant, 486-66MHz that could improve performance a bit and I thought the cheapest option would be to use a CFC >to>IDE Add adapter for works like an SSD - Solid State Drive. When I was looking for a suitable adapter I came across this one. Pros: + Reasonable price of $7.81 with free shipping when I bought this. + Installation without assembly, "Plug and Play". The system sees it as a hard drive, so no drivers are required. + CFC Activity Pass Through - This means that the LED on the computer's IDE controller board is showing CFC activity. + Selectable CFC voltage for +5.0V or +3.3V.+ - Supports both 40/44 pin IDE interfaces for compatibility.+ Announced - On-board jumper configuration to set IDE jumpers for master or slave mode.+ Announced - Supports Ultra DMA mode.+ Advertised - Compatible with CompactFlash Type I, Type II and Micro Drives.+ Advertised - Supports 40-pin and 44-pin IDE interfaces. Cons: - Cannot be hot-plugged, meaning the computer must be off to insert or remove CFCs. - Power cord is not included. - No IDE ribbon cable. included.- No mounting or mounting hardware included, you need to make your own mounting system.- Instruction manual is very small.- Advertising.- LED indicators for easy setup. β The LEDs on the board are very bright, they illuminate the computer case! - Advertised - Backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support. β I wasn't impressed with the tech support I was getting when I contacted them! :(CFC - CompactFlash Card Information: βͺ CompactFlash cards are set to two different modes: [1] "Removable Disk Mode" [2] "Fixed Disk Mode" βͺ Typically, commercially available CF cards are set to "Removable Disk Mode" and " Industrial CF βͺ A CF card with "Fix Disk Modeβ is used as a permanent storage device. Use this card to create fixed partitions, install operating systems or create a boot disk. βͺ Note that the Windows operating system does not contain system files saves on a removable disk, so it's important to only use CF cards set to fix disk mode Notes: βͺ Overall I'm happy with this CFC to IDE adapter and it speeds up the old 486- Really into the computer I installed it on. βͺ I used Norton Ghost 2001 for cloning Removing an old 512MB hard drive compact flash card Very easy and I have the old hard drive in the com as a backup computer left, not connected.
