Review on Memorex 1 44MB Floppy Discontinued Manufacturer by Chase Shetler

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fast, powerful drive

I bought a Memorex USB floppy drive, the packaging looks a bit different but it's probably the same product. For the record, my part number is 3202 3239. With that caveat, I'd say this drive is pretty good (assuming the one shown here is identical). I have a built in USB cable that is about 2 feet long. It was recognized by Windows XP without any problems. And the best thing is that he is fast in both reading and writing. While I haven't done a thorough comparison, I would suspect it might be 2X. At least I can tell my device is NOT one of those slow internal floppy drives that click stop click stop when it writes a large file smoothly, rather than rrrwww, click, rrrwww, click and try to use a file allocation table when accessing it find multiple files. It looks more like a 4X floppy disk I once used in a Sony digital camera (perhaps the speed improvement on this USB device is simply a result of the USB channel the data is passed through compared to the old ribbon cable connector built into floppy disk drives for floppy disks). .). The two small cons that I can think of are that it's a bit noisy and Windows refused to turn it off when I selected "Safely Remove Hardware" from the taskbar. The first is not a problem in my application, and the second I solved by simply unplugging the USB cable and waiting for all actions to finish. Several tests of its reuse showed that I didn't annoy the driver. It worked well. Bottom line - it's very workable and I'm planning on buying another one for work soon as we have a lot of expensive test equipment that writes screenshots to floppy disks and I'm afraid floppy disks are short lived for this world - so I'm filling in now :-)

Pros
  • Highly rated by testers for support and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
