Be careful not to scratch the surface! He removed my old oil seal but also scratched the sealed surface of the crankshaft. I had to polish out the scratches. I could have tried a little to avoid scratches, but given the complexity and clumsiness of the whole extraction, it proved really hard to avoid. I was able to polish out the scratches. A craftsman with less attention to detail might have overlooked this and wondered why the new seal wears out prematurely in operation. The small part of the hook is made of strong spring steel, which is much tougher than a lot of bar steel you'll struggle with.
