Review on Leifheit Cherry Stoner: Pit Catcher Container, Enhanced Ergonomic Handle, and Anti-Slip Rubber Feet by James Phillips

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This device isn't perfect, but I think it's worth buying for the home.

This device is not perfect, but I think it's worth buying for home food preservation. If I was just pitting cherries for a pie or two I would stick with my hand stoner or even use a knife instead. But for my production needs of 50 pounds a couple of times a year, Lefiheit has two advantages over individual hand crunching: speed and less mess. I just harvested 20 pounds of cherries in about 90 minutes with very few heads. I'd say around 25% of the seeds weren't removed, but the good news is they all seem to be hanging on a smoke and are clearly visible - apparently they're not hiding in the cherry. I say "apparently" because I did an audit and didn't inspect every cherry I removed. I hope that one day I won't get a nasty surprise when I bite the hole hard. If this happens I will definitely come back and check this review as it will make me stop using the device. If I need to inspect each cherry to make sure the pit has been removed, I can start with the pit by hand. But either way, the next step up from this device is a lot more expensive; If I had my own trees I could invest in them, but right now I can't justify the cost. I will happily continue to use this tool in place of manual pitting, despite its shortcomings.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • A little torn
