Review on High Power Tri-Power Portable Baofeng UV-5R Two Way Radio for Ham Radio Enthusiasts by Ray Richards

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This is a great little transceiver for a first time radio amateur.

This is by no means an 8 watt transceiver!, This is UV5, they are all 5 watts., I knew I couldn't do it, I took it because it was cheap. I already have a few more numbers and letters. They are good enough to take with you in an emergency or to take with you in the car. They will never be Kenwood, Swan, Yeasu or Icom. But who cares. It is what it is. If you want a Rolls Royce, don't buy a Yugo. The transceiver connects to a repeater near my house, that's all I need, I can hear perfectly with an extra mic/speaker. It works as intended. And if I leave it from a 40-story building, what's the difference, it will be less than $25. Everyone complains about the "hiss" in the sound. Well, I can't hear him because of the ringing in my ears from tank duty. It doesn't matter, buy or not buy. I think I've been honest enough. I will buy this again if I ever need it. I hope I made it clear enough. The other UV5R was my first HAM transceiver and these UV5R radios will always have a place in my heart. Another thought, the FM radio does it damn well when you're mowing the garden etc! GET AN AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE! Visit HRCC.COM or ARRL.ORG to find out how. 73 sec
