Please see my update after my first review. I've just received my radio so can't comment on durability but I have to say I haven't experienced any of the other negative reviews. .For example: noise in headphones or too much bass. I was playing music through the radio speakers and headphone jack (with headphones connected to my 5:1 surround sound system). I didn't hear any hiss and can describe the sound as full-bodied - not too bassy or tinny like most small speakers. Difficult to program presets. Select a station, press the memo button, scroll up or down to select preset 1-19, and press the memo button again. Nothing complicated. Bad reception. I live in a remote canyon at 6,000 feet and can tune in to my favorite AM and FM stations 100 miles across multiple mountain ranges. However, depending on the station and the room I'm in, I have to rotate the radio or antenna to fine-tune the reception. What people may not know is that AM reception is controlled by the internal antenna and therefore the radio must be turned on to fine tune reception. Rotate, shorten or lengthen the telescopic antenna to fine-tune FM reception. It doesn't work without batteries. Well I think so if it's not connected to the mains. However, when plugged into the mains, the radio works perfectly with or without batteries. The alarm is difficult or impossible to disable. Two options: press the standby button (on/off) or press and hold one of the two alarm buttons, depending on which alarm is used (there are two alarms that can be set independently: one on the radio, the other to the melody, gradually increasing in volume). The overall complexity of the setup. I found the instruction manual clear and easy to understand, so I can't talk about difficulties. Defect on arrival or after some time. My radio worked great right out of the box; time will tell otherwise. I'll post if there's a problem. Radio 6-1/4x4-3/16x1-7/16. With 4 Eneloop AA batteries, it weighs 1 lb 1.4 oz (17.4 oz). The antenna protrudes 26-1/4 inches from the top of the radio and is fairly thick, not flimsy, and I wasn't expecting it to bend or break easily. However, when fine tuning an FM station requires the antenna to be tilted more than 25-30 degrees from vertical (front to back), the weight of the antenna due to its mass will prevent the radio from remaining vertical. Simply place a thick book or other object behind the radio for support. I like the fact that you can set the watch face backlight from zero to three intensity levels: off for battery saving, dimmed for sleeping, medium for whatever. , bright for daylight. To use the weather alert feature, you MUST contact NOAA and determine which of the seven frequencies is best for determining your location. (I wonder if those who claimed there were no weather warnings dialed the right station.) Frequencies increase from 162,400 to 162,550 in 25kHz increments. (All explained in the manual) Radio 1 is set to 162.400, 2 to 162.425, 3 to 162.450 etc. NOAA displays coverage maps by county, making it very easy to browse the maps and select the frequency with the best coverage. in the area where you live. like that . . . Easy to set up, easy to use, lots of useful features and really great sound for such a small radio. Before, pressing different keys changed something other than what the key was intended for. For example, if you press the button to move the dial up / down, the areas will be changed, i.e. switches from VHF to Weather. Sometimes pressing the button to switch channels freezes not only the channel, but everything in a row, i.e. whatever you press, nothing happens. Coincidentally, the same is true for other buttons: press the volume up or down, something else changes. This phenomenon has gotten worse over the past year, and while the radio will turn off and on momentarily, it's essentially a nuisance. However, the most frustrating thing is that the weather alerts are now not enabled. The weather channel continues to broadcast, but there are no automatic notifications. So if you are not actively following the weather channel, you will not receive any notifications. This is important to me as I live in an area that experiences monsoon storms in the summer. I downgraded my rating to three stars because I don't think a $50 radio should start failing in two years. Also, I come from a time when quality came before profit. To this old man, gadgets these days seem to be designed and perceived as disposable items. Hey, my high-tech gadget breaks within a year, so no problem, buy a new one. Conclusion: While this radio works as intended, it is an amazing radio; one can only hope they justify their money for longevity. Ed
