I have a love/hate relationship with sponges. Love their cleaning ability, hate their bacteria. They're great for stainless steel as long as you don't let things sit and bake. They don't work as well as steel wool, mind you, but if you clean up after meals, then they're definitely for you. They will clear up a lot of messes but not all as they are malleable but the fact that they are washable and last almost forever - yes - made it worth it for me. Put some foam on them and you'll love them and wonder why you didn't think of this sooner.
