You can't always rely on developing tanks and spools etc that you don't service yourself. There's always a chance that someone who used them before you didn't clean them properly and your film will get dirty and not develop properly. I've had a metal tank and casters for a while, but I've found that these adjustable plastic casters, while a bit brittle if mishandled, are much easier to load. I chose this kit so I always have my own gear on hand in case I need to develop film. I rent time in a darkroom as I don't have the space or resources to set it up at home. When I use the darkroom, I bring all my stuff with me (tank, rollers, grain focuser, thermometer, filters, etc.) and I don't worry about what I don't need there.
