The soft, spongy side is enough and the rough side is enough.
I love these double sided hard sponges. one is softer and more absorbent and the other side has a rougher pad for easy scraping. I use them in the bathroom and in the kitchen. I washed pottery and soaped the soft side. Then when I need a little more texture for a light scrub, I switch sides. However, it seems that with more frequent use, the rougher layer can chip away, meaning it may not last as long. Comfortable and high quality.
