I bought these for camping and keep them in the back of our RV's kitchen drawer. They are strong when fully undressed and do not protrude when fully undressed. We have grandchildren and we love them because they reach quite a distance. Even if we help them, we don't have to worry about them getting too close to the fire. As you toast the marshmallows, try not to burn the remaining marshmallows on the ends of the sticks, as this will give the metal a dark gray color. Simply insert/dip into the extension, soak the ends in warm soapy water for about 5-10 minutes and simply dry. They clean up great! We occasionally have trouble removing the handle's plastic cover, but it's easy to put back on. In general I am very satisfied with the roasting sticks and glad that I bought them.
