Overall a decent kit. When it comes to assembling electronic components and troubleshooting I would say I'm an intermediate to advanced person and I think it's pretty neat. It's worth it for beginners. It definitely touches on a lot of electronics fundamentals. For example: you need to make sure you put in an electrolytic capacitor and the LEDs are pointing in the right direction - look for it. Since the LEDs are small, you need to be careful how hot you get the component when soldering so you don't fry it. You need to pay close attention to the different part numbers for MOSFET and transistor as both are very similar. You'll enjoy smearing the included heat transfer silicone over the heatsinks (they get hot). You'll also need to carefully scrape the resin off the coil wire with an X-Acto knife where you intend to solder it to the board to make the electrical connection (mine didn't work at first because I forgot). Pros: - You can probably assemble it in about an hour or less. There isn't that much detail. Comes with a cool nixie whistle for you to play with. Very cool glow. - Comes with a cute little neon light to play with. - Lights up a compact fluorescent lamp when you place it nearby. - Really works like a tiny Tesla coil. Always wanted mine! Cons: - Taking off a full star for the instructions, although there are a few videos on YouTube. I wasn't 100% sure how to connect the coil. (By the way, only one end of the coil is soldered to the board). Directions are fun to read! The red LED in my kit had the flat side on the positive terminal side, i.e. back. Has confused me. To be sure, I had to look at the component. The long leg was even positive in my case. - The included glue stick is pretty much useless - I used Gorilla glue to attach the coil to the board. I'm sure a hot glue gun would work as well. I totally understand why they can't supply a power supply, but it took me a while to find the right one. If you want instant gratification, find a power source first. I wouldn't say I was blown away by the sound feature, but I can listen to music through it. It went a bit. It doesn't shoot lightning at 6 feet, but it's cool. Take your time and have fun.
