Review on Precision at Its Finest: Work Sharp WSKTS-KO-W Knife & Tool Sharpener Ken Onion Edition by Kent Page

I really like the Ken Onion Work Sharp. I bought this because I wanted to try the raised edges on my knives without risking ruining them while learning how to work freehand. My first attempt at a Work Sharp was with the brand new Ontario Knives Rat-1, an inexpensive, well-made knife with a beautifully satin-finished AUS-8 blade. In just a few minutes, I was able to create a razor-sharp, beautifully mirrored edge. I also made MANY TERRIBLE scratches on the beautiful AUS-8 satin finish due to the metal particles that come off the edge during sharpening collecting on the corner rails. If you pull the knife as directed, you will get scratches. To be honest, I don't mind if my knives break during use, but I just can't imagine them getting damaged while sharpening. It's just not necessary. A quick search of the Blade forums confirmed that others have encountered the same issue, particularly with the polished finish. After reading a little further I decided to use masking tape on another knife to protect the blade. Problem solved, perfectly sharp convex edge in minutes and not a single scratch. Other sharpeners like the Apex Edge Pro actually offer this method. It would be nice if the guys at Work Sharp did the same. Despite this issue, if you want to try raised edges (they really are better), the Work Sharp is a great little machine at a reasonable price. I highly recommend reading the instructions carefully and sealing the edges of the blades with tape. Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my review.
