They're great for touching up your ax after use, but if you mess up the blade it's going to take a lot of sweat to sand it down with a Lansky washing machine. The washer has two sides: one to remove more material (coarse) and one to finish the edge (fine). Sharpening is a little easier if you can put the ax in a vise to hold it while sharpening. Don't forget to make both sides the same if it's just a touch. The washing machine is small and portable, so it doesn't weigh much or take up much space in your backpack or tool box. You can buy a thinner ornamental stone, but when chopping wood, it will give you an advantage in the task. If you want to be able to shave with your ax I would suggest getting thinner 15k and 20k Japanese wet stones to further dull your edge.
