Fit well, work well under a helmet

We bought 3 child and 2 adult sizes. We also bought 4 hats with an over-the-helmet (OTH) style face mask. Comparing the warmth of each, the OTH was colder in a way because there was room in my helmet for ventilation. However, they were cooler on the neck and face because they were not insulated. They fit snug enough for our kids to hold part of the face mask. As for me, part of the mask continued to fall under my nose. The OTH mask was easier to care for because I could put it over my glasses. We planned to use them in closer contact with teachers and OTH when we had more social distancing as they are warmer and more comfortable (softer). Children's OTH also sometimes didn't fit, especially when they were playing in the snow without a helmet. Blackstrap hats got wet from mouth/nose due to snow and heat/steam. They didn't dry quickly and stayed wet for a long time. This was also true of OTH soft face masks, but they had more material to absorb moisture so it was less noticeable. We found that the thicker hoods on the helmets were good at wiping away the kids' snot (they just "disappeared" magically). All in all, we will wear them again if the situation is right. My daughter and I preferred the soft OTH types. Three boys preferred this type. Both are better than the ones with holes for the nose and mouth which were not allowed to be used as face masks at the ski resort we were at. They passed the candle test if I didn't stretch the material too much. I was a bit apprehensive about it when I first tried them, but after wearing them all day the material feels looser on my face and isn't as stretchy.
