I have a 3 year old cat who weighs about 14 pounds and is too big for this small tree. We bought it for Christmas and three months later it fell apart. I think our cat is probably a little rough with him, but from the minute he first jumped onto the top perch we saw him flex under his weight. Now the game is to watch the cat climb on him and bet on when he will collapse under him. (It hasn't actually collapsed yet, so don't worry about the cat's safety and don't make mean comments.) It appears to be just carpeted cardboard. Most of the cardboard is now visible where he scratched it. It is noteworthy that our cat is even too long to climb into a small club box. It just doesn't fit. It's sad to see him trying to squeeze into her. But he fits on top of the soft perch and loves to sleep there. He also likes small dangling balls. If you have small cats that aren't too wild (and probably don't annoy you as much as mine does for forcing him to live indoors 100% of the time), you may like this. The price was right. My cat loves it but it won't last a year.
