This air cooler saved my computer and allowed me to work 24/7 with Folding@home. I've recently started using my distributed computing software called Folding@Home 24/7 as part of a community of hundreds of thousands of computers helping scientists calculate protein folding in the virus that causes COVID-19. I was happy to help with my 7 year old computer. (Fractal Design Define R4 Medium Tower case, Intel i5-3570 processor, 4 x 4 GB RAM, 3 intake fans and 1 exhaust fan, standard Intel air cooler). Everything started fine, but after a couple of hours the processor temperature rose to 90 degrees at 100% load. I set Fold@home to medium performance so the CPU usage dropped to 65%. I reinstalled the stock cooler and used new thermal paste as the old paste was 7 years old. The processor's temperature dropped to 85 degrees, but my hard drive was no longer recognized by the computer. Thinking the 2 year old hard drive had failed, I installed a new SSD. After 1 day, the SSD was no longer recognized by the computer. I turned off the computer overnight and the next morning the SSD was working fine with no data loss. My theory is that the processor overheated so much that it disabled an SSD (I use 2 other internal SSDs and 2 external HDDs) without shutting down the computer. I bought Scythe Forma 2, installed it and restarted Folding@Home with medium performance. . After an hour of 65% CPU running, the CPU temperature never rose above 65ยฐC and the computer remained quiet while the dual air cooling fans ran at 350 RPM (1200 RPM max). I couldn't be happier. The directions were pretty clear, except that you said which way to face the fans so they would push air front to back. However, there were great instructional videos on YouTube. The air cooler has two towers and two 120mm fans, so the cooling capacity has increased significantly compared to the standard Intel cooler. I have to say that until I started using fold@home, there were no processor temperature issues. I don't use my computer for gaming, but I often use multiple programs at the same time, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Family Tree Maker, Microsoft Excel, and Outlook. If I move to a new computer, I can use Scythe. The Forma 2 air cooler is with me because it can be used with both Intel and AMD processors. I will simply return the stock Intel cooler and donate a working computer. I reinstalled the hard drive to see if the problem is the CPU temperature. The hard drive worked without data loss. After running Folding@home continuously for 24 hours at medium performance, the processor temperature did not rise above 65ยฐC. My processor has a TDP of 77 watts. Now I can run the processor at 65%. 24/7 usage, so once again I'm helping scientists with the calculations in their COVID-19 research. Very happy with the noise level, the price and the ease of installation. There was no need to remove the motherboard, RAM or GPU. This was the first time I've installed a non-genuine air cooler on a computer and there have been no disasters.
