After years of putting off buying a business card scanner, I decided to take the plunge and amassed a stack of over 300 business cards. As a rule, I quickly master any technique that brings additional efficiency into my life. However, I was a bit skeptical about buying a business card scanner due to negative experiences with the product category. However, despite some shortcomings, CardScan Executive has paid off. Colleagues have argued in the past that the accuracy of such products is so low (less than 90%) that they do little more than manual data entry. The accuracy of optical character recognition when scanning complex multi-colored business cards is actually only 85-90%, CardScan software allows you to manually correct the data very quickly. OK, but the CardScan software highlights questionable data. At the same time, it allows the user to compare this data with a saved card scan. This mapping is an important element of the CardScan Executive solution value proposition. Accuracy, scanned images can be browsed while verifying intended OCR text Importantly, a user can quickly scan hundreds of business cards one at a time before a time-consuming manual correction takes place. This automated process capability is software that I didn't fully understand before purchasing. Let's assume you have 500 business cards with elaborate graphics, which gives you the right to assume a high error rate. This isn't necessarily a problem as you can 1) scan all cards, then 2) process (e.g. OCR) and then 3) check manually. The manual step can be completed in a few weeks if you wish. In my case, I often don't know if I need cards, so being able to scan and dispose of paper cards is important. Unfortunately it does not have a multi-sheet feeder, so it is recommended that 5-10 seconds per card should be spent on the initial scanning process. Another downside of CardScan Executive is that it doesn't learn on the fly. For example, if you have several business cards with crazy graphics from employees of the same company, the program will not recognize that you have already identified the key text on previously manually checked cards. Also, where the software can correctly recognize URLs and email domain names, it cannot intelligently determine the company name from this information. The difference between a domain name and the spelling of a company name is most noticeable for companies that have complex symbols embedded in their company names. Device and software limitations are most likely cost related. For a few thousand dollars, the above limitations could be lifted. However, at this price point, most people who estimate their time at over $20 an hour (a very low yardstick for white-collar workers) and who plan to digitize 225+ business cards over the lifetime of a product will see a positive return on their investment. Calculation3 minutes saved per card for 225 cards = 11.25 hours11.25 hours @ $20/hr = $225 >200 purchase price Intelligently extracts data from different parts of the card to improve optical character recognition (e.g. company name matches url/email domain)
