I have a 2003 Powerstroke 6.0 from 2008 and this is my 3rd alternator replacement in 11 years. The only indication of a generator failure that I get is the "battery gauge" on the dash of this truck. However, I've learned that the battery gauge means "your alternator has been discharged long enough to affect the battery - charge it soon and replace the alternator if it seems weak or dead." This one Transfer was fastest ever, a leisurely 20 minutes from start to finish. Three 13mm bolts hold the alternator in place and the serpentine belt has enough slack/tension to allow you to install the new alternator without problems. I have a "serpentine belt tensioning tool" in case I can't straighten it either. Line up the three screw holes correctly and this will be one of the easiest major part replacements you will ever undertake. I suspect the historically shorter life of my truck's alternators is due to the Texas heat, both in the engine bay with the alternator so close to the turbo, and the extra stress that internal cooling puts on the truck's 12-volt system exercises
