I've been using "thistle socks" to feed finches in the garden for a long time. The ones I've used are disposable "socks" filled with thistle seeds and can be found at grocery stores for around $4-$5. The birds love them. So when I saw KAYTEE FINCH STATION 2 I decided to give it a try. It's significantly larger than the disposable socks I buy and I figured it would save me time and money in the long run. The feeder is easy to set up - all you have to do is turn it upside down and stretch out the elasticated tops. of two "socks" over the rings in the gas station, and then hang up the shuttle. Thistle seeds are simply poured into the feeder once hung and the two socks will fill up quickly. The reservoir at the top of the station contains additional Thistle Seeds, which drop into the socks when the birds eat. Has been hanging on my patio for two weeks now. The finches are coming, but not in the same numbers as before. I'll spend more time on this, but the birds seem a bit put off by the look of the feeder (which looks a bit like some kind of alien creature!). I certainly didn't see the number of finches pictured on the box! Another negative - as some other reviewers point out, the weave of the mesh used for the socks is too open so the thistle seeds tend to fall out as the feeder fills up and as the birds tiptoe. I wouldn't say the Thistle "pours out" and I don't think enough is wasted to negate the positive aspects of the feeder. I also wonder if the finches will be put off by the open weave of the fabric. They really liked disposable socks more. Overall this is a decent feeder and the price here at Revain is very attractive (I saw the same feeder at my local hardware store for $17). It comes with two extra "socks" that should come in handy. UPDATE: The finches seem to have adjusted to the feeders - it took about a week but now I have plenty of birds. I can't say I've ever seen anything quite like the amount pictured on the box - in fact I'm not sure many birds will actually fit on this thing. The "socks" themselves are quite thin and long, and more than four or five birds will be quite crowded. But if you can't find a suitable seat, you can wait at the deck rail. So I have lots of colorful finches for my enjoyment! 2. UPDATE (9/10/2011): Okay, now I believe ALL the finches in Maryland live in my yard! I see 20 or more of them crowding this feeding station most of the time, and more up in the trees waiting to be seated. So I increase the number of stars to four (it would be five, but because of too much mesh weaving).
