Like nuts on both ends! You can hold each end to tighten or loosen (to remove). I put some lube on both ends (inside the threads) to prevent rusting (it's stainless steel so it shouldn't be, I'm just a bit anal). It's slightly (0.5 inch) longer without hitting the garage door. Yes, Firestik cannot go 3ft (too long) and 2ft is just a hair. It meets my specifications exactly. Sturdy enough to hold a 2 foot FireStik securely in place without wobbling or bumping into anything it's also not designed to.
