i haven't been able to use his backpack yet but looking at it when i received it it's pretty good and has everything the description says. . So there were no instructions in the kit so it was difficult for me to figure out how to remove the back panel. To do this you need to undo the top part of the Velcro on the outside of the pillow and remove the bottom bar from each corner below. And then you can pull out the whole back panel. The back consists of breathable mesh fabric and parts connected to the thigh. Once removed, you get a default backpack if you don't use it for hiking.
