All the hooks in my set needed quite a bit of work to make them usable. The have a finish much like disposable chopsticks. Like those, they need some buffing to remove splinters. On the large hooks, light filing with an emery board is enough. They will be fine for loose gauge projects. The smaller hooks require a lot more work. Thorough filing, oiling, waxing, and buffing is needed to give it enough slip to be useful. Even then, they are much stickier than metal or plastic hooks.Also, the smallest hooks are too delicate to be used unless you are very careful, but honestly you need steel for very fine gauge work.Pros: light, warm in hand, inexpensiveCons: some buffing etc is needed on all hooks, sticky texture even after hand finishing is hard on some yarn, texture makes work slowI want to like them, and I am hoping that with lots of use my favorite size hook will become smooth as a dream, but it's a lot of fuss for a hook. These are backups only.Update 1/13/14 - increased to 3 starsI've been using a few sizes of these hooks more regularly, and I really like them for certain yarns. Specifically, they have been lovely with all my sock yarns. I've made a few things with some luxury fingering weight, and some with inexpensive chain-store sock yarns, and these hooks have been the best for those projects.Now that I'm a more experienced crocheter, I know that a variety of hook materials is the best if you work with a variety of yarn. These are not perfect hooks, but they are pretty good.Also- the tiny hooks are not useful for crochet really, but they are excellent for picking up dropped stitches in knitting (I am a beginner knitter so it happens a lot). They are also great for adding a lifeline. I suspect they will be perfect for beading as well.Updated 8/10/14 to 4 stars. My most-used hooks are very smooth now, and I find I prefer these to metal. It was worth the initial fussing.
