Despite the snug fit, it was just a HUGE improvement over the more standard Elizabethan collar (aka "electronic collar"). With the E-Collar on, my dog kept bumping into things, fussing, rocking, and crashing into other things with it. It also crashed into me and my wife and the edge of the e-collar was sharp and painful. With this collar there is no such edge and with it he has significantly less stress which has allowed us to reduce the amount of his sedative. As mentioned elsewhere, this collar acts similarly to a whiplash neck stabilizer. Rather than providing a wide shield like an e-collar, it provides a rigid neck brace that prevents the head from rolling back and protects all parts of your dog except for the lower front paws and possibly the back legs. paws. While stiff, it's well padded and doesn't cause any discomfort. I've read of other dogs suffering from hot spots under the collar or around the edges, but ours didn't have this problem. Be aware that the collar should be placed fairly snugly around the neck (but not so tight that it restricts the airway) to prevent it from slipping out. In a comfortable position, the combination of shoulders at the bottom and ears at the top keeps you secure, and a sternum strap provides added protection from slipping. Two problems (only one is particularly important): 1) Regarding the size, we ordered by the combination of breed and weight. However, the collar is very, very close to being too big. It fits, but if the dog's neck was a millimeter shorter, this wouldn't happen. 2) strength. We're not exactly sure when or how this happened, but we did notice that the chest strap was almost completely frayed in 4 spots. It appears to be some sort of tear/cut from abrasion on the harness but we're baffled as this can happen even to a long haired, mostly sedentary dog. Our best guess is that the strap folded on its own and ripped apart when walking, lying down etc. My wife was able to cut a few pieces out of it and sew the strap back on and we will keep an eye on such issues in the future to keep. There is an extra rubber/velcro strap on the outside which also appears to have been cut off for unknown reasons - this happened whilst we were on holiday and we have no information from the person looking after the dog to explain what happened, so that's a different problem. These two belt issues lasted about 3 weeks. This latest strap release got me 4 stars instead of 5.
