I've read a lot about Altra Lone Peak being very popular with long haul travelers so I had to try them myself. I went with a mid-rise model to keep dirt and water out, so I don't know if they're similar to what backpackers use. Altra is clearly aimed at the market for people with very wide feet. I have medium wide feet and they are too wide for me. Even after adding a 3mm factory insole, my feet slide from side to side on the side-sloping hills. I've been looking for hiking shoes, but they're like high-top sneakers with ridged soles. The midsole is extremely soft and cushioning, making for a very unreliable feel on rocky trails. Even on flat terrain, I found the super-soft padding uncomfortable and tiring. My feet are used to minimal shoes (Merrell Trail Glove) for everyday use. and light hiking shoes (Salomon) for the trails, extreme cushioning is very foreign to me. Due to the soft sole and overly wide fit, wearing these shoes gave me big blisters on both of my big toes. I appreciate Altra making zero drop shoes but unfortunately not for me.
