I bought them mainly for the 'fractional' feature (which is fantastic). When they arrived I was very pleased with the obvious build quality, all metal and heavier than any other 6" caliper I've seen. Very smooth operation and no frills. The function keys have a pleasant tactile "click". Yes, you need to remove the screw (screwdriver included) to open the battery compartment. The battery cover is not captive, nor is the screw, so be careful not to lose it. I've seen a few negative reviews about their accuracy, so I tested the pair I received with Starrett micrometer calipers and those calipers were fine. I'm not sure how much more accurate you can expect from a caliper. If you need more accuracy, use a micrometer. Would definitely buy again - assuming they don't stop work prematurely.
