Plug it into your computer, click on the application and the device will search your hard drive for photos. I used it on my primary iMac and MacBook Pro and it extracted over 20,000 images with 60% space remaining. I really think the price of this item is "too high" - I paid $200 for it - especially since I keep getting emails from the company offering additional devices at deep discounts. keep coming back when I see pictures of the same external hard drives that are connected to my iMac. I haven't had a chance to look at the images to see if the device actually eliminates duplicates. In any case, it's nice to have a large storage device for irreplaceable images, that has no moving parts to mess with, it's a massive flash memory designed to provide very long-term, reliable storage.
