I bought one of the Winix machines and some replacement filters. Typically, filters need to be replaced about every 4-6 months. We live in an apartment building and we had a fire 6 floors above us. Our apartment was full of smoke and water. After the professional disaster recovery company finished their job, the smell of smoke was still there. I bought 2 more Winix machines and use them all the time. The air filters needed to be replaced after 2 weeks and that was to be expected - they were full of soot and airborne debris that would not have been there without the fire. Of course I changed the filters and left the Winix machines running. Four weeks into starting air filtration with Winix machines and new replacement air filters, we hired EcoSystem Environmental to test the air in our home to see if it's bad for our health. In addition to the "fresh air" sample from our terrace, air samples were sent to the mold laboratory for analysis. When the results came in, our air measurements were better than the "fresh" outside air. The air was measured for 8 different airborne fungal structures, dirt, rust and unspecified spores. On a scale of 1 to 5000, our bedroom scored 340 and our living room scored 730; exceptionally low in all conditions. The "fresh" air on the deck was 4100. I attribute this excellent result in part to a professional accident repair company and more to the Winix machine and air filter. Yes, measuring environmental air samples professionally was expensive, but our health was our primary concern and if the same situation were to arise again, I would test. However, I strongly recommend anyone living in a fire environment to use Winix machines and filters. We will continue to use them after the renovation of our house, because they are an important part of healthy living.
