I really thought it was keyless pairing since my surface has bluetooth, but I was wrong. key required. It takes a little getting used to the shape, but once you get the hang of it, it's awesome. The folding and auto shut off is a brilliant design. One day I took my Surface to a coffee shop to work on some stuff and when I realized I forgot my mouse I almost went home to get it. That's how much I feel it speeds up performance.
